Happy Father's Day

To the fathers and supporters that help us achieve greatness, we wish you a Happy Father’s Day!

Father’s Day celebrates fathers and is observed on the third Sunday in June in the United States of America.

Celebrations to honor fathers go back to Babylon, the capital of ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq).  Ancient referring to 3100 B.C. to 476 A.D.  "The earliest record of Father’s Day was found in the ruins of Babylon.  A young boy named Elmesu carved a Father’s Day message on a card made out of clay...He wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life" (University of California, Davis).

Unknown artist.  Edward Winslow, 1651.  Pilgrim Hall Museum, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

1607: the first lasting English settlement, Jamestown, was established in the New World.  Thirteen years later, 102 settlers aboard the Mayflower landed in Massachusetts at a place they named Plymouth.  With these two colonies, English settlement in North America was born." (Fisher)

1620: Remembering Plymouth Colony's first colonial English father Edward Winslow: "In 1617 Winslow moved to Holland, where he united with John Robinson’s church at Leiden, and in 1620 he was one of the Mayflower pilgrims who emigrated to New England.  His first wife, Elizabeth (Barker) Winslow, died soon after their arrival at Plymouth.  In May 1621 he married Mrs. Susanna White, the mother of Peregrine White (1620–1704), who was the first child born among the New England colonists.  Winslow’s marriage to Susanna White was the first in New England" (Encyclopedia Britannica).

"In 1909 in Spokane, Washington, Sonora Smart Dodd heard a sermon about mothers on Mother’s Day.  She thought that fathers should have a day to honor them as well.  Her father, a Civil War veteran, had raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth....In 1972 President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation that made Father’s Day a permanent holiday" (Encyclopedia Britannica).

According to researchers at the University College London Medical School, "paternal education had an important indirect effect on offspring ability via occupational status as well as parenting skills.  It may be that the intellectual home environment was influenced by the resources available for parents to interact with, and invest in, their children" (Byford, Kuh, and Richards).

Addressing the Opioid Crisis Workshop

LCROC participated in a critical workshop on Thursday, June 6, 2024.  Della Lisi Kerr, B.Sc., an expert from the Orange County Health Agency, helped us discover ways to build a safer and healthier community.  The workshop is part of LCROC’s commitment to provide resources for our members and solutions to the problems in our county.

Thank you to John Kristianson for sponsoring the event to help make it possible. The ongoing and continued support is much appreciated. Additionally, we appreciate your trust in our organization and investment in our founding mission.

Thank you to Four Sons in Huntington Beach, CA for providing great service and a great space for our workshop.

Background

“In Focus: Fentanyl - Addressing the Opioid Crisis in Orange County. This drug is 50 times stronger than heroin. It is being illegally made and found in a variety of pills, sold on social media sites and can cause poisoning, overdose and death. Learn prevention strategies and about the lifesaving overdose reversal drug, Naloxone.

Drug overdose (poisoning) is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States, causing more deaths than motor vehicle crashes. Opioids – both prescription painkillers and heroin – are responsible for most of those deaths. The number of Californians affected by prescription and non-prescription opioid misuse and overdose is substantial, with rates varying significantly across counties, and even within counties. Orange County is no exception.

The ADAB (Alcohol and Drug Advisory Board) is responsible for advising the Orange County Alcohol and Drug Administrator and Board of Supervisors on substance use issues impacting the health and safety of Orange County residents and communities. It is comprised of 15 community members, appointed by the Board of Supervisors, who advocate for and provide prevention, treatment and recovery services to those in need.” (OCHCA)

DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION: SOCIAL MEDIA Drug: Trafficking Threat

DEA Operation Chem Capture Precursor Chemical Supply Chain: "Precursor chemicals for the manufacture of fentanyl and methamphetamine, and other synthetic drugs – like xylazine and nitazenes– are made in China and shipped to Mexico and the United States"

“[L]esbian, gay, and bisexual adults are more likely than straight adults to use substances…” (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration)

“15% of high school students reported having ever used select illicit or injection drugs (i.e. cocaine, inhalants, heroin, methamphetamines, hallucinogens, or ecstasy). 14% of students reported misusing prescription opioids. Injection drug use places youth at direct risk for HIV, and drug use broadly places youth at risk of overdose. Youth opioid use is directly linked to sexual risk behaviors.” (Centers for Disease Control)

If you or someone in your life needs support, contact your doctor and get further information.

DEA One Pill Can Kill: "DEA created this campaign to encourage the use of social media to help raise public awareness of a significant nationwide surge in counterfeit pills that are mass-produced in labs, deceptively marketed as legitimate, and are killing Americans at an unprecedented rate."

Fentanyl is Forever: "a comprehensive initiative aimed at raising awareness about the critical issue of fentanyl misuse in Orange County."

Ancient referring to 3100 B.C. to 476 A.D.  Mother's Day in the Middle Ages (476 A.D.-circa 1500 A.D.) developed across cultures in Europe to honor mothers during Lent, the time of year when Christians prepare for Easter" (Encyclopedia Britannica).

Susanna White Winslow was one of three expectant mothers who crossed the Atlantic aboard the Mayflower.  Discover more about Susanna White Winslow, the wife of Edward Winslow and the mother of the first Pilgrim child born in the New World.  "For the 300th anniversary of the Mayflower in 1920, the Daughters of the American Revolution commissioned the lovely Pilgrim Mothers statue which stands in Plymouth [Massachusetts].  The names of the females on the Mayflower-as known in 1920-are on the back of the statue" (SMDPA).

Anna Jarvis originated Mother's Day in the U.S., "she wanted to honor her mother, whose dream it was to have a day that celebrated mothers. On May 10, 1908, the first official observance of Mother’s Day was held at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia...Within five years, almost every state was observing the day. Twenty Years of Legal Marriage for Same-Sex Couples in the United States

According to the authors of "Twenty Years of Legal Marriage for Same-Sex Couples in the United States", "...the United States was divided by heated debates over legalizing marriage for same-sex couples...The evidence review revealed that for LGBT individuals and same-sex couples, their children, and the general U.S. population, the benefits of access to legal marriage for same-sex couples are unambiguously positive...The new analyses found no evidence for a retreat from marriage; in fact, there was evidence for a possible 'increase' in marriage resulting from legalization of marriage between same-sex partners..." (RAND).

The report demonstrates the significance of marriage, the benefits for families, neighborhoods, and the track record of success of same-sex couples.  Fact-based stories, reviews, and analyses were utilized to prove the positive consequences of same-sex marriage.

The authors of the report studied the impacts of legal same-sex marriage, the impacts on children, communities, marriage rates, and attitudes in the general public.  These complex and deep questions built upon previous studies and are a fascinating read.  Visit here for the full report

LCROC: Team Building for Good with Foster Love

LCROC had the excellent opportunity to volunteer at Foster Love on Thursday, April 18, 2024.

Foster Love improves the ways kids experience foster care.

"Foster Love began as a sports camp offering after-school enrichment to foster youth who otherwise could not afford the activity. As the charity grew, we've tackled larger problems including access to higher education, emergency resources, and more.

Foster Love is a dynamic non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children in foster care. Our passionate team, comprised of adults and former foster youth, works tirelessly to ensure these vulnerable children are not forgotten or neglected. Through collaborations with individuals, companies, and community partners, we provide essential resources and educational opportunities for foster youth.

Superhero boxes combat the uncertainty and depression children often feel while in foster care. The goal is to help foster youth feel S.U.P.E.R. (Self Assured, Uplifted, Proud, Empowered, & Resilient)!

A Superhero Box is a kit filled with all the items you need to help children in care unleash their inner hero.  The interactive kit allows our sponsors to help decorate superhero items that are then donated to children in foster care nationwide." (Foster Love)

Foster Care Facts: Youth typically spend about 20 months in foster care. 6% of all children in the U.S. will find themselves in the foster care system before they turn 18. There are approximately 430,000 children in foster care. 50% of the U.S. homeless population spend time in foster care. (Foster Love). The main reasons children enter foster care are neglect, drug use, and abuse by parents. Research has consistently shown that nearly 1 in 5 foster care youth are part of the LGBTQ community. In many circumstances, being LGBTQ is a part of the reason that they are in foster care. (Youth.gov)

LCROC at the UNDIVIDE US Film Premiere

Left to right: Senior Account Manager at Iron Light Nico Zviovich, LCROC Interim Secretary Brendon M., and LCROC President Jesse B.

LCROC helped to host a special screening of UNDIVIDE US on Monday, April 15, 2024 in Irvine, California.

"The audiences for this film are everyday Americans, leaders, and organizations who are looking to break the narrative cycle of toxic division and build bridges within their local communities. We will reach these audiences by hosting screenings in partnership with a network of state and community-based think tanks, key nonprofit organizations, civic groups, educators, and concerned citizens.

Our distribution strategy will emphasize the film's call to action: that we must put toxic politics in its place and reclaim our ability to engage in important conversations where dialogue is open, respectful, and thoughtful.

UNDIVIDE US challenges the idea that citizens who disagree are not capable of civil conversation and demonstrates the truth that, even in our differences, the American experiment is still alive and well.

It exposes the power players in Washington DC as the true disruptors of peace, driving our legitimate differences to the brink of disaster. Hear from experts about the roots of this toxic polarization and learn how to counteract it in our local communities and lives.

Aiming to awaken the silenced majority that seeks solutions rather than strife, UNDIVIDE US is not just a documentary; it’s a timely and urgent plea to reclaim the nation’s soul through self-governance, open discourse, and civic engagement." (UNDIVIDE US)

The post-screening discussion was led by Kristi Kendall, the film's director and Carrie Conko, the film's producer.
