SIGN THE TAXPAYER PROTECTION AND GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY ACT: An important initiative is circulating for signatures right now that will protect California taxpayers from the relentless increases in taxes as well as the introduction of new fees (taxes in disguise!) without first being presented to the taxpayers for a vote.
This initiative gives voters the constitutional right to vote on all new or higher state and local tax increases.- Stops bureaucrats from increasing fees and our cost of living without a vote of the Legislature or local government.
- Stops politicians from promising to spend our hard-earned tax dollars like the gas tax on popular things like roads and then quietly shifting those tax dollars to other priorities.
- Stops politicians from creating “hidden taxes” by calling tax increases a fee to prevent you from voting for approval.
- Requires all tax proposals clearly explain to voters the use, rate, and duration of any new or higher tax so we can hold the government accountable for how it spends our tax dollars.
- The state has over a $45 billion tax surplus and is raising taxes and fees again this year. Cities are too.

There are SO MANY OC Superior Court Judge positions open this year, and we're so delighted to have had a packed house for our forum with Shawn Nelson and Peggy Huang! And we even had another candidate join us (Eric Scarbrough who is DTS but not opposing a Republican) running for another open seat! Thank you all, and thank you to our venue (Royal Hen) for hosting us. Please let us know what you think about the venue!

Thank you to the many attendees who joined our brunch honoring Kelly Ernby. Our chapter gathered together on Sunday, January 30, 2022 to honor our dear friend and fierce Orange County Deputy District Attorney Kelly Ernby who passed on January 2, 2022. The Board of LCROC extends their deepest condolences to her husband Axel Ernby and her family and prayers for this devastating loss.

We have an exciting year ahead. LCROC held its board retreat on Saturday, January 29, 2022. A productive day of reflection, planning, and collaboration to make 2022 a terrific and strong year.

John C. Merrill - Designing a Better Future
From an early age John has dedicated his life to public service and community-centered volunteering and work, including a wide range of committees, boards, and governing bodies. Mr. Merrill earned a Bachelor’s degree in Construction/Civil Engineering from Western Michigan University in 2001 and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2005. His most influential public service role has been as Board member and Vice President of Copper Creek Homeowners Association, a gated community with 600 single-family houses, which he helped rescue from the verge of insolvency to become one of the most well-managed and respected private communities in Southern Nevada. He also recently served two terms as a member of the City of Costa Mesa Bikeway and Walkability Committee. His latest endeavor is serving as Chairman of the California Log Cabin Republicans PAC.
Mr. Merrill first entered the transportation engineering field in 2000, after working several summers for a rural electric company as a field engineering aide and drafter. He worked with Michigan Department of Transportation in regional transportation planning, as well as active transportation design, where he found his passion - keeping America moving. He went on to work on both transportation design and planning projects spanning 6 states. John is both a California Professional Civil Engineer and Traffic Engineer, and in 2011, served as the engineer in responsible charge of the nationally recognized “Carmageddon” closure of the I-405 Freeway in Los Angeles. Mr. Merrill is currently a Senior Project Manager and Planning Practice Lead for LIN Consulting, Inc., a local Southern California Traffic, Civil, and Electrical design firm.
John and his husband Jorge live in sunny and energetic Costa Mesa, California with their three dogs Dexter, Roxie and Quetzi. Both John’s and George’s hobbies include dog rescue, music, gardening, home improvement, and travel.
