Volunteer Experience at Second Harvest Food Bank, Irvine

Volunteer Experience at Second Harvest Food Bank, Irvine
*Tentatively Scheduled

You are needed. Our organization has a long tradition of volunteerism and community work. Last year, LCROC organized a toy drive for Spark of Love and it resulted in hundreds of children receiving toys and sports equipment.  Volunteering at Second Harvest is another opportunity for us to be community leaders and make a powerful contribution.

“IN ORANGE COUNTY IN 2020,RESEARCH SHOWS 48.8% of Students WERE ELIGIBLE FOR FREE OR REDUCED-PRICE SCHOOL MEALS. Hunger affects residents of all ages everywhere in Orange County. Hungry kids lack the energy and focus to do well in school. Hungry adults struggle to perform at work. Consistent access to nutritious food helps fuel focus, productivity and well-being so everyone can thrive.” (Second Harvest)

“Volunteers are the heart and soul of Second Harvest Food Bank. We could not accomplish our mission without you! Help us bring consistent, nutritious food to those experiencing hunger in Orange County by planting, harvesting and maintaining the produce at Harvest Solutions Farm. All food is ultimately distributed to individuals and families in Orange County.

Directions and Parking: The Harvest Solutions Farm is located at Irvine Blvd and Lambert Road near the South Coast Research and Extension Center (SCREC). To access parking, you will pass the SCREC main entrance on Irvine Blvd and turn right onto Lambert Road. When you turn onto Lambert Road, please drive slowly since there are pedestrians and equipment moving in the area. The parking is along the fence, past the check-in table.

Please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the start of the shift to allow time for parking and check-in.

What to Wear and Expect: Closed-toed, rubber soled shoes are required; keep in mind footwear may get muddy—we suggest an old pair of running/tennis shoes or hiking boots. Pants are required; long sleeve shirts are strongly encouraged; you may be exposed to scratchy plant material, rocks in the soil, etc. We strongly encourage hats and sunscreen. Participants are welcome to bring garden gloves appropriate for food handling (gloves that have not been used for handling insecticides, pesticides, etc.) If you do not bring a pair of gloves, you will be provided with single-use gloves. For personal safety reasons and to prevent foreign object contamination, we ask volunteers to refrain from wearing jewelry that dangles and/or has detachable pieces such as bracelets, necklaces and dangly earrings. There will be drinking water available on-site but you are welcome to bring your own water, or reusable bottle for refilling. You will be exposed to the elements so please consider the weather and plan to wear comfortable clothing for movement between crop rows. Please keep in mind, you will be repeatedly bending, walking and moving around throughout the shift. Shade and water will be available to take breaks as needed. We recommend not bringing any valuable items with you as we are not responsible for any lost or stolen items.:
