The trailblazers of California were courageous and created the state and culture. Jedediah Smith (January 6, 1799—May 27, 1831) was born in New York of English Puritan descent. Smith was a hard-working trapper, trader, and frontiersman. His brave trek over the Continental Divide to California created some of our cultural foundations.
